The German Shepherd Dog has evolved differently across regions and breeding philosophies over time. While the breed’s origins remain rooted in purpose, structure, and working stability, modern populations now vary significantly depending on how, where, and why they are bred.
At Vom Eistobel, we made a deliberate decision to build our breeding program upon exceptional European foundation bloodlines originating from proven, highly consistent breeding programs in Poland and neighboring regions. This decision was made with careful consideration and a clear long-term vision. It was driven by firsthand recognition of the profound difference between preserving established, purposefully developed bloodlines and the increasingly common practice of diluted breeding, where consistency in type, temperament, structure, and coat quality is left to chance rather than achieved through generations of thoughtful selection.
Historically, the Long-Haired German Shepherd was at times placed at a disadvantage within certain show-focused breeding systems, where preference was given to specific coat standards over the full natural expression of the breed. Despite changing preferences over time, the long-hair trait has always remained a natural and genetically established characteristic of the German Shepherd breed, preserved through generations of responsible breeding.
Within structured European foundation programs, this trait was never lost, but instead maintained through deliberate preservation of recessive genetics across carefully planned breeding lines. Rather than allowing it to disappear through narrowing selection, these lines retained the genetic potential for long- hair expression across generations.
At Vom Eistobel, our foundation includes these structured European lines where the long-hair gene has been consistently preserved. Through intentional selection and an understanding of inheritance, we are able to work with this recessive trait in a controlled and predictable manner within our breeding program.
